The cocoa pod (la cabosse in french) is the fruit of the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). It is a sort of berry that contains between 15 to 40 cocoa beans. The pod mesures 15 to 25 cm in length and weighs between 300 to 500 g, and has the peculiarity of growing directly on the tree trunk. The cocoa tree, of Mexican origin, was first introduced into Spain in 1528 by Hernán Cortés and then into France by Anne D'Autriche during the reign of Louis XIV. Story has it that Louis XIV did not like chocolate, which was made from cocoa powder, spices(chilli) and hot water.
